In 2019, the Gainan family donated their iconic floral and gift shop, located on 30th Street in downtown Billings, to St. John’s United. The building was constructed in 1986 and included a state of the art greenhouse. The greenhouse is now being utilized to grow lettuce and herbs to sell to the St. John’s culinary services provider and as an Urban Horticulture Education Center providing learning opportunities for local students.

The greenhouse utilizes cutting edge aeroponic vertical farming techniques to produce delicious greens. Rainwater will be harvested using seven collection barrels that will supply water year round, and solar panels with a net meter will be installed allowing the greenhouse to function sustainably and without operating expenses.

Urban Horticulture Education Center

St. John’s United and Billings Public Schools have partnered to create the Urban Horticulture Education Center (UHEC) greenhouse that will be used as a year-round classroom for high school students enrolled in Future Ready, Frameworks and Special Education programs to gain on the job experience in urban agriculture for high school credit. The UHEC greenhouse will be an intergenerational space where students will work alongside St. John’s residents as they are involved in every step of the growing process from starting seeds to harvesting.

In addition to high school students, the UHEC greenhouse will provide learning opportunities for approximately 600 middle school and elementary students as a fieldtrip destination and curricula supplementation for Project Lead the Way.

Why Aeroponic Vertical Farming?

  • Water Saving: Aeroponic technology uses only about 5% of the water used in conventional farming.
  • Space Saving: Growing vertically saves 75%-95% of space.
  • Increased Nutrient Density: This system produces crops with higher nutrient density, increased antioxidants, improved flavonoids (aka tastiness), and better crop yields compared to traditional soil farming.
  • No Soil: Fresh food can be produced in inner cities and in areas where soils have been destroyed.
  • Reductions in Carbon Footprint: Normally, food grown on the farm requires higher transportation inputs including tractors, trucks, and fuel to move it to its destination. Vertical farming can be set up in close proximity to consumers, lowering transportation inputs. It can also be done sustainably by using rainwater and solar power.

Greenhouse Goals

  • The Greenhouse will facilitate a nurturing environment for residents of St. John’s United by providing inter-generational life enrichment opportunities and fresh food to eat.
  • Serve as a learning place for Students of Billings School District 2 by providing work and education opportunities.
  • Supply the chefs at St. John’s United with fresh greens.

Two weeks ago, I noted how our phones bring back memories from photos we had taken years before. The earliest memories of our lives seem to surface in much the same way. Only these memories come with the caption, “this life, perhaps you remember?” The memories may be pleasant ones, confusing ones, or difficult ones. They may ring with the truth of why our lives are lived the way we live them. A painful memory may reveal why we constantly seek safety and security in our lives. A confusing memory may shed light on why we do not like to take risks. The memories can give us clues into who we are and why we are that way. One such memory, mostly a pleasant one, surfaces for me from time to time. I am 3 or 4 years old. It is a pleasant summer day in New Jersey. My face pressed up against the front screen door. I can smell the mix of metal screen and dust. My mom is standing behind me and we are watching my dad drive off to play golf on a Saturday. “Someday,” I declare, “I’m going to be like Dad and play golf and drive a sports car.”

I know it is Saturday because of the rhythm of our lives. Monday-Friday and he would have been at work. Sunday and we would have been going to church. I know how old I am because he drives off in the blue Sunbeam. He has not traded it on the black MG(b) yet. I laughed as an adult when I bought a VW Golf and that memory returned to me. The memory is a reflection of the way I see life’s promise, hope, and possibilities. I defined myself then in the shadow of my father.

These sorts of things shape our lives. We all have these moments that help define us and reveal something of the truth of our individual self. These memories and moments can help us understand why we react to circumstances in our lives as adults. By owning the memory and a willingness to learn from it, we can grow beyond it and develop new patterns in our lives. The joyous and traumatic experiences of our lives continually give shape to why and how we react the way we do. I recall the sign that declared, “Life is 10% experience and 90% interpretation of that experience.” The shape of a healthy life seeks more balance in those percentages.

Life clearly has been, and continues to be, out of balance. Whether it is the worldwide public health crisis caused by Covid, or drought, heat, and fires caused by climate change; reactivity to all things has increased significantly. We can lose sight of the shape of our memories and the truth they have taught us about ourselves when we react in the ways of division and fear. It is during times like this that I find myself reaching back to that 3 or 4 year old who still lives within me and remind myself of the hopes and dreams I still hold. It helps return balance to my life. Within that balance, I am able to re-grasp my adult values of care for neighbor and self that lead me out of reactivity and into relationship once again.

Peace,

Karl

I find it fascinating how our phones will bring back pictures we have taken in the past. The photo icon appears and presto, 5 years ago on this date, 2 years ago…etc. Our memories tend to work that way as well. Snapshots from the past enter; sometimes unbidden, sometimes bringing a smile, sometimes tears, and sometimes fear. The time of the pandemic has many people looking backwards remembering what was. I hear the phrase “before the pandemic” frequently, followed by a waxing of nostalgic memories.

There is also a growing sense of impatience and a desire to move quickly beyond the restrictions of the pandemic. We hear a growing number of stories of the increase of unruly behavior and violence on airplanes and on the highways. Situations that use to call simply for a polite “oh, I’m sorry, excuse me” now rapidly escalate into heated exchanges. We use to be able to agree to disagree, but now such exchanges come with distortions and personal attacks. Rather than seeking understanding, we have become quick to interpret in order to react in a negative way. I believe this is all an outgrowth of our impatience and frustrations.

Right now, at this time, we need calm and loving hearts more than ever. Right now, at this time, simply being a caring human being is more important than ever. Right now, to side with kindness, love, mercy, and grace is necessary. Right now, more than ever, doing the most caring thing we can do for another is life itself. I believe, based on what has been shown me in my life, that we are here as humans to be in loving relationships with one another. We are here to care, to help carry one another’s burdens, to walk alongside one another, to laugh and to cry.  The world needs your human center now more than ever. You are important and necessary – always, but especially now.

Peace,

Pastor Karl
